In 1991 this constituency elected a humble farmer who would one day go on to become prime minister: H D Deve Gowda. He did not recontest the 1996 election, because he had become chief minister of his state by then. When destiny beckoned him after the 1996 election, he moved on to the Rajya Sabha, but he is in the fray this time.
