No dispute over 1984 riots, claims Congress

The Delhi Pradesh Congress today said there was no dispute in the party about fielding those accused in the 1984 riots, and claimed that a recent controversy regarding this was a ''media creation''.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and PCC president Subhash Chopra said former Union minister and party nominee for the South Delhi seat, Manmohan Singh, had at no stage made his contesting the elections conditional on Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler being denied the party tickets. ''Dr Singh himself has said that he never made any such comment at any stage. These are misunderstandings created by the media,'' Chopra said at a press conference.

Claiming that the Congress was poised to repeat its success of the assembly elections in the Lok Sabha polls, Chopra introduced to the press Janata Dal corportors Razia Sultana from Jaffrabad and Zamir Ahmed from Seelampur, who had joined the party. Rebel Congress MLA Matin Ahmed, who was also present at the press conference, said he would work for the victory of the Congress candidates.

Asked about the delay in the announcing of Congress candidates for four of the seven Lok Sabha seats in the capital, Dikshit quipped, ''Slow and steady win the race''. CWC member and party candidate for the New Delhi seat, R K Dhawan, was also present.
