The second day's play of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka was washed out because of persistent rain in Galle on Monday.

Initially, overnight rain had caused the start to be delayed as some parts of the outfield had become damp but thereafter it rained persistently since morning ensuring that no further play was possible during the day.

The umpires made a decision at 1515 IST to call off the play for the day.

The start of first day's play on Sunday, was also delayed by 30 minutes due to wet ground conditions.

Interestingly, the weather forecast as far as the Test match is concerned is not very encouraging as heavy rain shower are predicted for the next few days in Galle.

On day one, Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana hit centuries to put Sri Lanka on top against India on a rain-truncated opening day.

Having elected to bat, Sri Lanka were sitting pretty on 256 for two in 68 overs before play was called off early due to bad light a few overs after the tea break.

Paranavitana, who brought up his maiden Test century, was unbeaten on 110 from 229 balls, having hit 12 boundaries, and Mahela Jayawardene was not out on eight from 14 balls.

Sangakkara made a fluent 103 from 145 balls, laced with 12 boundaries, before he pulled a short delivery from Virender Sehwag straight to the fielder on the midwicket boundary. The Sri Lankan captain provided his team with the perfect platform as he put on 181 runs in 236 balls for the second wicket with Paranavitana.

Sri Lanka's legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is playing his final Test match. He needs eight wickets to complete his 800 wickets in the longer version of the game.
