- On completing his half century, he became the third opening batsman to score four fifties in the World Cup after India's Gautam Gambhir and Australia's Matthew Hayden.

- On reaching 67, he achieved the highest score by a West Indian batsman against India, obliterating Dwayne Bravo's unbeaten 66 scored at Lord's on June 12, 2009.

- On 79 he registered the highest score by any batsman against India, expunging Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara's 78 at Nagpur on December 9, 2009.

- On 89 he achieved the highest score by a captain in the World Cup. He bettered his own score - 88 - against Australia at the Oval on June 6, 2009.

- With 98 runs, it is the fourth occasion of a batsman scoring a ninety in the World Cup. The details:

India's Yuvraj Singh (vs England at Durban on September 19, 2007) and Australia's David Warner (vs India at Bridgetown on May7, 2010) are the others to do so.

- With seven sixes in this match, Gayle has now taken his tally of sixes in the World Cup to 27- maximum for any batsman. He surpassed India's Yuvraj Singh's tally of 24 sixes.

- Gayle has now hit 34 sixes in all Twenty20 internationals. Only Yuvraj Singh and Brendon McCullum (38 each) are ahead of him.

# Ramnaresh Sarwan became the fourth West Indian batsman to register a first-ball duck in the World Cup after Jerome Taylor, LMP Simmons and Xavier Marshall.

# MS Dhoni got run-out for the fifth time in all World Cup matches. He now shares the record of getting out on most occasions in this fashion in the tournament with New Zealander Daniel Vettori.
