Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was in Delhi on the fourth day of the first cricket Test against England after his grandmother's demise, was not on the field when play on the final day of the match commenced in Ahmedabad on Monday.
Gambhir "is on his way back", informed Cricket Board's media manager Vinod Deshpande but he could not say exactly when the player would reach the ground to rejoin his teammates.
According to other sources, the Delhi cricketer is scheduled to arrive in the city at 1:00pm and depart at 7:30pm.
Gambhir was substituted on the field by Ajinkya Rahane.
Gambhir cannot open the Indian second innings even if he had taken the field this morning as according to the laws of the game, he cannot come in to bat till the fall of the fifth home wicket.
It remains to be seen who accompanies Virender Sehwag to open the Indian second essay in place of Gambhir.
