Pakistan took command of the second Test against Australia on Monday, amassing a lead of 204 runs by close on the second day at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Replying to Australia's paltry first innings toal of 127, the tourists, who resumed the day on 14 without loss, were 331 for 9 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Danish Kaneria was unbeaten on two with Mohammad Asif yet to open his account.

Pakistan looked set for a huge lead but lost their last five wickets for 54 runs after the second new ball was taken. Doug Bollinger (3-70) accounted for three of those wickets and Shane Watson (2-40) picked two late in the day.

Mitchell Johnson (2-64) claimed the important wickets of Salman Butt and Mohammad Yousuf when both batsmen looked settled for big scores.

Openers Imran Farhat (53) and Salman Butt (71) were involved in a valuable partnership of 109 before for the former, dropped in the slips on 11 by Marcus North, was caught behind by Brad Haddin off spinner Nathan Hauritz.

Haddin had a hand in the next dismissal too when he caught Butt after 35 more runs were added to the Pakistan total.

Peter Siddle then had Faisal Iqbal (27) brilliantly caught by Watson on the point boundary.

Pakistan's hopes of a huge total were dashed when captain Mohammad Yousuf (46) was out after edging a rising delivery from Johnson to Haddin, and Bollinger had Umar Akmal leg before for 49.

Bollinger also had Misbah-ul-Haq (11) caught behind and Kamran Akmal (14) holing out to Watson at deep point to check the Pakistanis.

Late in the day Watson had Umar Gul (12) caught by Bolliner on the boundary and Mohammad Sami (13) edging to Haddin, who took his fifth catch of the innings.
