Mass hysteria at Chowpatty

September 26, 2007

Mumbai's Chowpatty wore a jubilant face on Wednesday morning, as thousands of students - mostly from Wilson college - gathered on the road for a glimpse of the victory bus, carrying the Indian cricket team.

The mass hysteria started as early as 10:30am, as the crowd braved the rains and waited patiently for the bus, which finally arrived at 12:45.

Lectures during this time were called off, as the faculty and even the principal, stepped on to the pavement to take part in the celebrations.

The mood at Chowpatty was ecstatic. People shouted slogans like `Chak De India' and `India zindabad.' They also cheered every bus or truck that passed, since they did not know which one the team would be travelling in.

Before the team bus actually arrived, over 50 police motorbikes passed by, making for a spectacular sight.

Yuvraj Singh and Irrfan Pathan seemed to be the most active on the bus, as the former cheered and the latter blew kisses into the crowd.

Wilsonians sent up a special cheer for the BCCI's Chief Administrative Officer, Ratnakar Shetty, who is a professor attached to the Wilson College faculty.
