England wait on injured Jones

Tony Lawrence | August 28, 2005 15:15 IST

England [Images] are hoping fast bowler Simon Jones recovers from an injured ankle in time to play a full part on the fourth day of the fourth Ashes Test on Sunday.

Australia [Images], however, are hoping he does not as the world champions try to avoid going 2-1 down in the five-match series.

Jones was forced from the field and taken to hospital during the final session on Saturday as Australia, following on and needing 259 to avoid an innings defeat, closed the third day at Trent Bridge on 222 for four.

England said in a statement that Jones, who took five wickets in Australia's first innings, had been fitted with a surgical boot and would have ice treatment before being assessed again on Sunday morning.

Australia batsman Justin Langer, asked about Jones at a news conference, said: "He has bowled very well. It would be nice if he wasn't playing because he has played so well.

"The England attack reminds me of some of the West Indies [Images] attacks when I first started playing. They have been relentless."
