  • This match was the 19th between these two teams in England. The home team is ahead with a win-loss record of 10-7. Two matches were washed out.

  • Michael Vaughan was playing his 50th match. He became 28th Englishman to do so.

  • Alex Wharf was making his international debut for England. He became 183rd player to represent England in shorter version of the game at the highest level.

  • Anil Kumble was playing his 27th match against England – most for India. He surpassed fellow teammate Sachin Tendulkar's tally of 26 matches.

  • Wharf took a wicket (Sourav Ganguly) in his first over in ODIs. He became tenth Englishman to capture a wicket in his first over in ODIs after Geoff Arnold, David Lloyd, Derek Randall, Darren Gough, Peter Martin, Chris Silverwood, Steve Harmison, Ricky Clarke and Richard Johnson to do so. All others, except Lloyd and Randall, performed this feat in their debut match. Lloyd and Randall rolled over their arms for the first time in their seventh and 21st match respectively.

  • Mohammad Kaif (50) made his eighth fifty (apart from one hundred) in his 73rd match. This was only his second fifty in 14 matches (and 12 innings) in this year.

  • Steve Harmison became the second English bowler to perform a hat-trick by dismissing Mohammad Kaif, L Balaji and Ashish Nehra in his ninth over (44th of the innings). James Anderson, who did not play in this match, is the only other bowler to perform a hat-trick for England - versus Pakistan at The Oval on 20-06-2003.

  • Harmison also became the third bowler to perform a hat-trick against India after Pakistan's Aaqib Javed (at Sharjah on 25-10-1991) and New Zealand's Danny Morrison (at Napier on 25-03-1994).

  • Interestingly all three hat-tricks made against India are exceptional in one way or the other. Aaqib Javed had all his victims LBW, whereas Morrison managed to hit the timbers three consecutive times. Harmison, for a change, had all his victims CAUGHT.

  • As many as seven different English fielders held a catch in Indian innings. This was the fourth such occasion for England. In the World Cup 1991-92 match against West Indies at Melbourne and in 2001-02 series against New Zealand at Auckland, seven different fielders held a catch. The record for England is of eight fielders taking a catch versus Sri Lanka at Ballarat in 1991-92 World Cup.

  • Kumble had a nightmarish match as he conceded 57 runs in his 6.2 overs at an economy rate of 9.00 runs per over. This is his worst performance in a match where he bowled more than one over. He had gone for 51 runs in his six overs (RpO 8.50) versus Sri Lanka at Pune on 05-12-1990, which was his worst economy rate in a match previously.

  • Kumble's performance is the second worst by an Indian against England bowling at least five overs in a match. The record is still held by Ajit Agarkar who conceded 47 runs in his five overs (RpO 9.40) at Mumbai (Wankhede) on 03-02-2002.

  • Flintoff sealed the victory with a six (off Kumble). This provided the second such instance for England against India. Ian Botham had ended the match at Ahmedabad on 25-11-1981 with two successive sixes.

  • Wharf won his maiden Man of the Match award in his debut match. He became tenth Englishman to win MoM award on ODI debut.

  • England are having a totally skewed playing record. Batting first and second, with Michael Vaughan their captain, they have won 12 out of the 22 result-producing matches.
