Gaffer bids farewell

The accolades are pouring in as Stewart's career nears the end.

England coach Duncan Fletcher: 'I really believe he is one of our few world-class players. He has kept wickets magnificently and I think he's got better and better.'

David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors: 'He has set the standards in terms of fitness, and he is 40 going on 30 even now. He doesn't give anything to chance and is hugely professional in his preparation and in the manner he plays the game.'

Former England player Angus Fraser, writing in The Independent: 'The 40 year old has always felt that it was not up to him to offer good quotes and to be a personality. His job was to score runs and take catches. It was how he performed in the middle, not at a press conference, that counted.'

Surrey teammate Graham Thorpe, as quoted by The Telegraph: 'Al has been a pretty unique cricketer. He lives his life under strict rules and disciplines and that's how he's managed to get this far. Everyone who's played with him has huge respect for his longevity, his professionalism and his desire to play.'
