Gaffer bids farewell

Having played 133 Tests, Stewart is England's most-capped Test cricketer. Before the Oval Test against South Africa, he had scored 8,425 runs, at an average of 39.55. Only Graham Gooch, with 8,900 runs, has scored more runs in England's Test history.

He took over the captaincy from Mike Atherton in 1998 and promptly led the side to its first major series triumph in 10 years, against South Africa. 'Stewie' was stripped of the captaincy after England's poor performance in the 1999 World Cup.

Nicknamed 'Gaffer' for his loud talking behind the wickets, he is a die-hard Chelsea fan. Asked about his plans after retirement, he said: 'When you are in Dhaka (England tours Bangladesh in October) I'll be in Rome, watching Chelsea play Lazio.'
