Saluting the Legends

Vijay Samuel Hazare -- the last of India's original cricket legends -- gifted his India blazer from the 1953 tour of the West Indies to the CCI for its proposed cricket museum. MCC President Charles Fry and Raj Singh Dungarpur -- who joined the BJP last month -- have a look at the jacket.

Fry has a distinguished grandfather -- Charles Burgess Fry. A contemporary of Ranji, CB played 26 Tests for England (his country never lost a Test under his captaincy), represented England in football and held the world long jump record (23 feet 5 inches) for 21 years. A lifelong friend of Ranji, he even represented India at the League of Nations and was once offered the throne of Albania.

One of 20th century sport's most memorable characters, this great all-rounder turned to horse racing when he was in his 70s, provoking one contemporary to quip: 'What as, Charles? Trainer, jockey, or horse?' For more on this amazing athlete, read the great Neville Cardus' tribute in the then Manchester Guardian.
