Back injury not serious: Sehwag

Ashish Shukla | July 31, 2003 18:15 IST

Indian batting sensation Virender Sehwag is back at home in Najafgarh, a middle-class locality of New Delhi, and quick to discount any theory about his back injury.

"It is not an injury as such; more of a back sprain," said the swashbuckling batsman, who appeared tired because of jet lag, not to speak of months of grind on the county circuit, which he endured during his stint with Leicestershire.

Virender SehwagSehwag though admitted that his back troubled him enough to be referred to a doctor, which finally led to release from his contract with the county side.

"The doctor was thorough in his examination and said I needed a rest of three to four weeks to stop the injury from worsening," commented Sehwag.

"The county was considerate and thoughtful and released me so that I could recover from this physical discomfort.

"They also were mindful of the fact I had to attend the national camp in August and be fit for subsequent cricket engagements for my country and wanted to allow me enough time to recover," he added.

Sehwag's injury and the abrupt termination of his contract with Leicestershire led to some wild theories, one of them being he couldn't adjust to the grind of county cricket.

"It's not true. I was actually enjoying my stint with the county and in the last few days was actually beginning to feel better and better," he clarified.

Sehwag is keen to put all the speculation about his injury to rest and will soon get in touch with the Board and its physician, Dr Anant Joshi, to update them about his condition.

"I've just returned and so didn't have time to get in touch with the Board. I will now do so," he said.

Sehwag feels his back "just needs a bit of rest", and doesn't think the sprain will prevent him from discharging his national duties.

Since his elevation as a Test opener against England last summer, Sehwag has played relentlessly in both forms of the game, including the gruelling 2003 World Cup in South Africa, followed by the trip to Dhaka, for the TVS Cup in April, and then the hectic county grind.
