Statistics say a lot about Gavaskar: 10,122 Test runs (second only to Allan Border), an average of 51.12 over 125 matches, and a record 34 centuries.

Few know that not one of those 34 tons came at Lord's.

As captain he was involved in the maximum number of draws -- 30, in Test cricket. A statistic that would reveal that he was a defensive leader. But he also led India to 9 wins in 47 matches and suffered only 8 defeats.

His captaincy during India's World Championship triumph in Australia in 1984/85 was one of his high points.
