Gavaskar was a shrewd cricketer, but he also had a short 'fuse' during his playing days. Nothing illustrates that better than an incident in Australia during the 1981-82 tour.

Adjudged out leg-before wicket after the ball had taken a thick edge of his bat, a furious Gavaskar, then the captain, ordered his opening partner Chetan Chauhan to also to leave the field with him. He suggested to the team management that India should withdraw from the Test. However, wiser counsel prevailed and the matter was sorted out, with Gavaskar eventually apologizing.
