August 17, 2003 15:47 IST

Sri Lankan Test player Kaushal Lokuarachchi escaped serious injury but was arrested after a fatal car accident on Saturday morning, local police said.

Lokuarachchi, 21, lost control of his car after returning home late from Colombo, crashing past a bus stand, through a wall and into a roadside house.

He escaped with minor shoulder injuries after the activation of the car's safety airbags but a woman was killed and her son critically injured in the crash.

"Kaushal Lokuarachchi knocked into a mother and son waiting at a bus stand at 4.20 am on Saturday morning," police spokesman Rienze Perera told Reuters.

"The mother succumbed to her injuries in Ragama National Hospital while the son is still critically injured," he said.

"Lokuarachchi was examined by a police medical officer who reported that he was not under the influence of liquor."

Lokuarachchi was arrested before being released on a 50,000 rupee ($500) personal bail. He will be formally charged for causing a fatal accident on August 29, police said. They did not know the age of the boy.

Lokuarachchi, a leg-spinning all-rounder, has played three Tests and five one-day internationals.
