Pakistan cruise to second win

April 05, 2003 01:17 IST

Pakistan cruised to their second successive victory at the quadrangular tournament in Sharjah on Friday defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets.

Yousuf Youhana (64) and Younis Khan (57 off 49 deliveries) were the main architects of the victory after the bowlers had done a good job of restricting the Lankans to a modest 223 for six.

The Lankans total owed a lot to Kumar Sangakkara who struck his maiden one-day century.

Sangakkara, who came to the crease after the fall of the second wicket in the 13th over, scored 100 off 111 balls with nine fours and added 57 runs in an unbeaten seventh wicket stand with Kumar Dharmasena (23 not out).

Pakistan paceman Umar Gul removed Marvan Atapattu (13) while Mohammed Sami took the prize wicket of Sanath Jayasuriya who fell for 27, just seven short of the landmark of 9,000 runs in one-day cricket.

Sangakkara kept losing partners at regular intervals. Avishka Gunawardene (17) and Jehan Mubarak (20) each made a start but fell trying to step up the scoring rate.

A direct throw from Sami signalled the end of Gunawardene while Mubarak was stumped by Rashid Latif off Shoaib Malik.

Sangakkara remained unruffled and reached his 50 from 75 balls, with three fours. His 100 came in the last over of the innings.

Sangakkara failed to inspire his team to victory but won the man-of-the-match award for his efforts.

Zimbabwe play Kenya on Saturday in the third match of the tournament.
