Alka Yagnik, Babul Supriyo, Live!

Babul Supriyo's climb has been astonishingly swift. From being known as a Kumar Sanu clone a few years ago, he has gone on to become a playback singer in his own right with hits like Hataa saawan ki ghata in Hello Brother and Dil ne dil ko pukara in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai to the more recent Chori Chori, Chupke Chupke.

The film Hamari Bahu Alka did not rule the charts as a top-grosser, nor was it remembered for stupendous performances. But this modest success from the Rajshri stable is best remembered for gifting Indian music oen of its greatest success stories - Alka Yagnik. From a seemingly insipid debut, Alka's mellifluous voice, amazing adaptability, and impressive repertoire is indeed reassuring. In the age of flash-in-the-pan appearances, this is one singer who has repeated her class act again and again and again.

Consider this simple fact: all the musical hits of 2000, Refugee, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Mission Kashmir, Josh, Dhadkan, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, have Alka in common.
