Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has questioned the appointment of Sachin Tendulkar as the vice-captain of India's World Cup team, saying it would have been better to give the post to someone younger to groom him for the top job.

"I feel the vice captain should have been someone young, so that we could have groomed him for captaincy. Till the time Rahul Dravid is playing, he should remain the captain," Kapil said.

He also said it was rather strange that Tendulkar accepted the offer.

"Sachin has never shown any interest in becoming the captain of the team again. He has never said anything publicly about his desire to become captain again," Kapil was quoted as saying in a press release issued by TV channel 'Aaj Tak'.

"If he wants to take up the job, he should say it openly and not merely talk to selectors. And it would be an insult to Sachin if the selectors made him the vice captain and then decide to make someone else as captain," Kapil said.

The former World Cup winning captain said he would have rather preferred Sourav Ganguly to be Dravid's deputy.

"In fact, if Sourav Ganguly could fit into the side, he would have been a better deputy," he added.
