- Herschelle Gibbs (on 60) became the fifth South African batsman and the 49th batsman in LOIs to aggregate 4000-plus. This was the 120th match and innings of his career.
- Gibbs later recorded his 12th hundred of his career. This was his second highest score of his career after his 153 against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom on 3-10-2002.
- It was his maiden century against New Zealand. His previous highest was the 91 he made at Birmingham in the last World Cup, on 10-6-1999.

- Gibbs's 143 was statistically the second-best individual score at this ground after the unbeaten 143 by Australia Andrew Symonds against Pakistan five days ago on 11-2-2003. However, it was the highest by a South African batsman at this venue. Gary Kirsten had made an unbeaten 133 against India on 5-10-2001.
- Gibbs's 143 is now the highest individual score made by a South African batsman for a losing side. Gibbs's had made 116 (retired ill) during this team's loss to India in the ICC Trophy at Colombo (RP) on 25-9-2002. This was the fourth time South Africa has lost a match despite a century by Gibbs.
- Gibbs's 143 was the highest individual score for a losing side in the World Cup surpassing the previous highest of 142 by Zimbabwean Dave Houghton against New Zealand at Hyderabad (I) on 10-10-1987.
- The catch of Mark Boucher was Chris Cairns's 50th of his career in 157 matches. He becomes the sixth Kiwi fielder and the 53rd player in LOI to reach this landmark.
- Shane Bond (73 runs in 10 overs) has now conceded the maximum runs by a Kiwi bowler against South Africa. Nathan Astle had conceded 72 runs in his 10 overs at Auckland on 27-3-1999.
- South Africa's 306-6 was the now the second highest total made at this venue after Australia's 310-8 against Pakistan last week. However, it was the home teams best at this venue bettering the 280-4 in 48.2 overs against India on 5-10-2001.
- This was South Africa's third highest in a World Cup match after the 328-3 against Holland at Rawalpindi on 5-3-1996 and 321-2 against UAE also at Rawalpindi on 16-2-1996. However, this total was South Africa's best against a Test-playing nation in the World Cup. Their previous best against a Test nation was the 287-5 also against the Kiwis at Birmingham on 10-6-1999.
- Playing in his 192nd match, Fleming made his fourth LOI hundred (134 not out), which was the highest of his career. His previous highest was the unbeaten 116 he made against Australia at Melbourne on 21-1-1998. Incidentally, Fleming last three figure score (111 not out) before this one came against Australia at Napier on 12-2-1998. This means Fleming has gone through 110 matches and 104 innings without scoring a hundred. During this period he made 2783 runs (avg. 28.99) with 20 scores in the fifties and a highest of 96 v Zimbabwe at Dhaka on 24-10-1998.
- The unbeaten partnership of 140 runs between Fleming and Nathan Astle was New Zealand's best for the 2nd wicket against South Africa, eclipsing the previous best of 98 between Mark Greatbatch and Ken Rutherford at Christchurch on 24-2-1995.
- The above partnership was also the highest for any wicket by any team against South Africa in the World Cup. The previous highest was the 138 between the West Indians Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul at Karachi on 11-3-1996, which was also for the 2nd wicket.
