Pakistan on Tuesday recalled veteran opening batsman Saeed Anwar and all-rounder Azhar Mahmood for the World Cup, while accommodating most of the cricketers currently touring South Africa.
The announcement of the 15-member squad also ended the debate on the captaincy, as Waqar Younis was retained skipper for the February 9 to March 23 tournament in South Africa.
Announcing the team, national cricket selectors chairman Wasim Bari told reporters in Lahore that the team looked formidable to win the World Cup despite recent poor performances and it had the capacity, talent and capability to regain lost glory.
"Of the 15 selected players, 11 have played in previous World Cups. Besides, there are 14 boys who are playing or have played on the recent tour to Africa. The only new faces in the squad are maybe Saeed Anwar and Azhar Mahmood," he said.
"Saeed has been included because of his rich experience while Azhar Mahmood has an excellent track record in South Africa. Dale Naylor, Surrey's physiotherapist, has informed us that Azhar would be ready for the tournament," Bari said.
The team: Waqar Younis (captain), Saeed Anwar, Taufeeq Umer, Saleem Elahi, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Wasim Akram, Rashid Latif, Mohammed Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq.
