Srinath not in my World Cup 15: Ajit Wadekar

December 30, 2002 12:28 IST

Former chairman of selectors Ajit Wadekar believes veteran seam bowler Javagal Srinath does not deserve a place in the 15-member squad for the World Cup in South Africa next year.

"He may be India's best bowler but what do we do after his ten overs? Where do we hide him on the field?" he asked.

"Rather than pick him, I would prefer having (Ajit) Agarkar in the squad."

"Dinesh Mongia's ability as a fielder and batsman places him ahead of (VVS) Laxman in the team. Laxman has had his chances but does not seem to be the man for the one-dayers.

"Yuvraj Singh, though he has not been in very good form, might click at the World Cup. His fielding is an added asset to the team. He waited on the side-lines for a long time after being dropped, I think he should be persisted with," said Wadekar, who was the chairman of the selection committee that picked the team for the 1999 World Cup in England.

"Among the spinners, Harbhajan Singh is the certainty and Anil Kumble gets my nod ahead of Murali Kartik. One-day cricket is all about containing and I think Kumble with his experience has a much better chance of doing that. Kartik took a lot of wickets on the India 'A' tour of South Africa but Kumble has over 300 wickets in international matches."

"Sanjay Bangar and Agarkar would be the two all-rounders of the team with the former edging out the latter in the first eleven stakes."

"Other than that the team mostly picks itself. I am against picking up a newcomer like Avishkar Salvi or Irfan Pathan, despite their obvious talent, for such a big tournament. Ideally I would have liked to have Ajay Ratra as my second wicket-keeper but the selectors have not included him among the probables and I think that is a mistake."
