Waugh's WC hopes fade in rain
December 10, 2002 11:45 IST
Test captain Steve Waugh's chances of winning a place in Australia's one-day team for next year's World Cup slumped further on Tuesday when a practice match was cancelled because of rain. Waugh was dropped from the one-day side in February and replaced as captain by Ricky Ponting, then left out of a preliminary 30-man World Cup squad announced by selectors last week. The 37-year-old was to captain New South Wales in a 40-overs-a-side practice match against Australia in Sydney on Tuesday, but heavy rain overnight and in the morning forced officials to cancel the fixture. The match was Waugh's last real chance to press his claims for selection before the final 15-man World Cup squad is named on December 31.
