Lara named in WI World Cup squad

West Indies fast bowler Nixon McLean and batsman Brian Lara have been named in a preliminary 30-man squad for next year's World Cup in South Africa, West Indies selectors said on Monday.

McLean has not played for West Indies since a series in the Caribbean against South Africa in 2001, while Lara has been out since he collapsed in Sri Lanka at the Champions Trophy suffering from what was initially suspected to be hepatitis.

West Indies officials later ruled out hepatitis but refused to say what Lara was suffering from.

The 29-year-old McLean has been playing domestic cricket in South Africa since last appearing for West Indies.

He was one of five players named in the squad who have not played international cricket this year.

The other four are left-handed batsman Floyd Reifer, left-arm spin bowler Neil McGarrell and fast bowlers Reon King and Kerry Jeremy.

Selectors also named four players, opening batsman Devon Smith, left-handed all-rounder Ian Bradshaw, left-arm spin bowler Sulieman Benn, and wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert, who are yet to play senior international cricket.

The squad will be reduced to the final 15 by December 31, with the players participating in a two-week training camp in Antigua before leaving for the World Cup on January 28.
