US awarded rebuilding contracts in 1997 itself, says Iraq

March 28, 2003 01:33 IST

At a Security Council debate on Thursday, the Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammed Al-Douri, accused the United States and Britain of trying to wipe out the Iraqi race.

Accusing the US of awarding contracts for rebuilding of Iraq in 1997 itself, he asked the UN to help stop the aggression.

Even as the Iraqi ambassador was winding up, his American counterpart, John Negroponte, walked out.

"I did sit through quite long part of what he had to say, but I had heard enough after what he had to say and did not hear anything new," Negroponte said.

He said he was fed up with the "preposterous allegations" against the US.
