Blast outside British embassy in Pakistan

A small explosion took place in the parking lot of the British High Commission in Islamabad on Thursday afternoon.

"The explosion occurred in a vehicle in the staff car park adjacent to the High Commission," spokeswoman Rachel Jameson said.

She said there were no casualties. "It appears as though it was an explosive device," she said, saying no more comments further. She said the High Commission had alerted the Pakistani authorities who "are scrutinizing matter urgently".

Quoting witnesses, another report said that a large number of police personnel had gathered around the High Commission compound.

Pakistani security forces have tightened security at the embassies of Western countries, including the United States and Britain, after the September 11 terrorist strikes in the United States and the US-led military campaign in Afghanistan.
