Pak to freeze funds of terrorist groups

Muhammad Najeeb in Islamabad

Pakistan has ordered its banks both at home and in the United States to freeze the accounts of 27 terrorist groups, companies and individuals whose financial assets were frozen by Washington as part of its crackdown on global terrorism.

Official sources said the State Bank of Pakistan issued instructions to scheduled banks to freeze the accounts of the groups and companies listed in President George W. Bush's executive order on Monday.

The list includes the Al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden as well as of bin Laden himself.

Of the groups in the list, one -- Harkat-ul-Mujahideen -- operates out of Pakistan.

Three Pakistani banks -- Habib Bank, United Bank and National Bank -- have branches in the US.

Following is the list of the 27 individuals and groups the State Bank here has provided to different banks:

Individuals: Osama bin Laden; Muhammad Atif (aka Subhi Abu Sitta, Abu Hafs Al Masri); Sayf al-Adl; Shaykh Said (aka Mustafa Muhammad Ahmad); Abu Hafs the Mauritania (aka Mahfouz Ould al-Walid, Khalid Al-Shanqiti); Ibn Al-Shaykh al-Libi Abu Zubaydah (aka Zayn al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn, Tariq); Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi (aka Abu Abdullah); Ayman al-Zawahiri; Thirwat Salah Shihata; Tariq Anwar al-Sayyid Ahmad (aka Fathi, Amr al-Fatih); Muhammad Salah (aka Nasr Fahmi Nasr Hasanayn).

Charitable organisations: Makhtab Al-Khidmat; Wafa Humanitarian Organisation; Pakistan-based Al Rashid Trust; Mamoun Darkazanli.

Al-Rasheed Trust, which is included in the list, has an account in the foreign exchange branch of the Habib Bank. The account has now been frozen.
