Attacks on Sikhs a crime,
says America

The United States on Monday condemned the attacks on Sikhs in the aftermath of last week's terrorist strikes in New York and Washington, describing them as a "crime" and assured to make all out efforts to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Counsellor (political) in the US Embassy in New Delhi, Dr Robert Bogg, called on Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers and senior Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and expressed serious concern over the attacks.

Several Sikhs have been attacked all across the US after being mistaken as Afghans.

"The US government is very concerned. It (the attacks) is a crime. It is wrong," Bogg told reporters emerging from a meeting with Dhindsa.

Vice-chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh was present at the meeting, which was held following a discussion between Dhindsa and US Ambassador to India Robert Blackwill on Sunday.

Later, Dhindsa told reporters that he suggested to the US official to educate Americans about the identity of Sikhs.

A Sikh immigrant Balbir Singh Sodhi, who was mistaken for an Arab, was killed by a gunman at a gas station in Arizona on Saturday.
