Concerned over the "tragic and unfortunate" killing of a Sikh in the US, India on Sunday asked American authorities to prevent attacks on the community in the aftermath of last week's terrorist strikes in New York and Washington.
As reports of the killing of 52-year-old Balbir Singh Sodhi came, Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal sought immediate intervention of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to ensure safety and security of Sikhs in the US.
"Badal spoke to the prime minister over phone and requested him to take up the issue with the Bush administration and ensure safety and welfare of Sikhs," Punjab Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh told PTI in Chandigarh.
An external affairs ministry spokesperson while conveying New Delhi's "deepest sympathies" to the family of the victim said "our embassy and consulates in the US are in touch with the authorities there. We are concerned about these attacks."
An Indian immigrant Sikh Balbir Singh Sodhi was killed by a gunman at a gas station in Mesa, Arizona on Saturday.
Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Mike Goulet said authorities had not determined the motive for the shooting.
