Some tough talk awaits
Colin Powell in Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is all set to convey to US Secretary of State Colin Powell arriving on Tuesday that India has reached the end of its tether and it will take all measures on its own to stamp out continuing terrorist activity in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Monday's army shelling of Pakistani positions across the Line of Control was our message that we are determined to confront and stamp out terrorism," said a joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs.

"The time for diplomatic niceties is over. India is fighting with its back to the wall and our leadership will tell the US secretary of state that we will not hesitate to defend our unity and integrity with every resource at our command," the joint secretary said.

He asserted that while "India is an active partner" in the global coalition against terrorism, it is not willing to remain an idle spectator as "those encouraging terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir are rewarded."

The MEA, however, is maintaining a façade of normalcy, emphasising that Powell's discussions with the leaders in New Delhi "will carry forward the momentum of the productive and close engagement between our two sides over the past nine months."

That India's patience against continuing cross-border terrorism in J&K has run out became evident on Monday as New Delhi gave the green signal to the army to destroy enemy bunkers and posts across the border.

The action also revealed Prime Minister Vajpayee's determination to take Pakistani challenge in Kashmir head-on.
