Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi
The Indian government on Friday clarified that Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed's change of name will not help it escape from being listed by the US as a terrorist organisation.
"It (Jaish's new name) is a fig leaf at best. We are hoping that it would be shortly included in the US list of global terrorist organisations," external affairs ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao said in New Delhi.
She did not agree that Jaish's change of name would throw up technical difficulties in its being declared a terrorist outfit.
"Jaish-e-Mohammed's heinous acts have been noted by the international community...it cannot escape responsibility for its terrorist acts like the recent attack on the Jammu and Kashmir assembly building," she pointed out.
Responding to a question, Rao said India had established contact with Pakistan to extend humanitarian aid to Afghanistan refugees. "We have offered tents, blankets and quilts and it has been welcomed," she said.
She said that the Indian high commission in Islamabad is in touch with the Pakistani public information department for restoration of its access to television news channels. The high commission's television connection was cut suddenly two days back.
