Israel extends support to US-led strikes

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said that his country would provide all possible help to the United States following the US-led strikes against Afghanistan aimed at Saudi exile and prime suspect in the September 11 bombings in New York and Washington DC Osama bin Laden.

"Israel will provide help but is not taking part in the war," Sharon said.

He had been informed of the imminent attacks by US President George Bush on Sunday afternoon, the prime minister's office said.

Sharon also said that all necessary measures had been taken to ensure the security of the Israeli people.

In another significant development, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al Faisal told Time magazine his country believes there is enough evidence that Osama was behind the September 11 attacks.

Faisal also sought to emphasise that the US was targeting terrorists and their backers in its war against terrorism as opposed to a specific country and its people.
