General Musharraf calls Vajpayee

Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Monday night spoke to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said the two countries should not do anything to heighten tension in the region.

The Indian leader in turn told him bluntly that Islamabad had done nothing to capture perpetrators of violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the 15-minute telephone talk between the two leaders which began around 9 pm, Vajpayee told Musharraf that India had never done anything to escalate tension in the region and has always been for peace, official sources said.

Musharraf said Pakistan stood for dialogue with India and Vajpayee responded by saying that while India has always been for talks, the exercise cannot be meaningful if Pakistan remains 'unifocal' on Kashmir.

India and Pakistan should develop their bilateral relations in totality taking into consideration its multifarious aspects, the sources said.

Vajpayee told Musharraf that perpetrators of violence have their base in Pakistan and that Islamabad has done nothing to capture them.

The Pakistani President replied, "We are looking into it."

This is the first time since the Agra Summit that both the leaders have talked to each other.
