A Canadian defence ministry official said on Monday night that Canadian troops chosen in mid-November to join the US-led military campaign in Afghanistan would be mobilised in the next seven days.
"Only a unit of 100 to 200 people is on 48-hour alert," defence spokeswoman Diane Grover was quoted as saying by a news agency. The three C-130 Hercules airplanes that Canada also plans to deploy are expected to be mobilized within seven days, as well.
Meanwhile, in London on Monday, British Defense Minister Geoff Hoon said that British troops could be deployed to join US soldiers near the Afghan city of Kandahar, but added that no decision had been taken.
Earlier, Hoon told Parliament that most of the 6,000 British elite soldiers who had been on 48-hour alert to go into Afghanistan were being stood down.
