The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press said on Friday that American jets mistakenly bombed a convoy of elders going to Kabul for the swearing-in ceremony of the interim administration headed by Hamid Karzai on Saturday, killing at least 65 people and wounding several more.
AIP said the US jets bombed the convoy in eastern Afghanistan on a road at Sato Kandaw, 25 km of Gardex, capital of Paktia province.
It added that the jets are still continuing bombing the region.
Though there was no independent confirmation of the report, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld at a press briefing on Friday admitted that US planes in eastern Afghanistan had attacked a convoy.
He, however, refused to divulge any further details.
