Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on Tuesday arrived in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, to question captured Al Qaeda fighters, reports said.
It is for the first time since the 1940s, when agency sleuths searched for Nazis in South America, that agents have landed in a foreign country for investigative work.
An agency report said eight agents landed in the former Taliban stronghold to help establish a detention centre at the Kandahar airport.
No prisoners have yet arrived at the base, the report said.
The report quoting marine officer Captain Thomas Schmidt, in charge of the detention facility, said the centre 'is probably the most secure place in Afghanistan' and that the 'marines have learnt a lot from the prison uprising in Mazar-e-Sharif'.
