The American stars and stripes flag flew in the Afghan capital of Kabul for the first time in 12 years, when two US marines hoisted it in the American embassy compound in a ceremony on Monday.
The marines hoisted the same flag on the same flagpole from which it was lowered in January 1989, following security fears just before the withdrawal of Soviet troops.
US special representative James Dobbins, said, "The flag-raising symbolised that Washington is committed to being diplomatically, politically and economically engaged in Afghanistan."
The Americans would be initially running a liaison office -- reportedly headed by charge d'affaires Jeanine Jackson -- eventually establishing full diplomatic relations, report quoting US embassy spokesman John Kincannon said.
