US must decide Mullah Omar's fate: Britain

Britain on Friday said it was up to the United States to decide the fate of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.

"We have always said that he should be brought to justice," Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman said.

"We have always recognised that because the atrocities took place in America, the US is the lead country," he added, referring to the September 11 attacks on US cities.

The spokesman said he believed that Mullah Omar and Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden were still in Afghanistan.

"The net is obviously closing in. The successes of the last week means that the net gets tighter and tighter."
