Ex-Kandahar governor takes control
of residence

The former governor of Kandahar, Gul Agha, on Friday took possession of his former official residence in the city.

"Gul Agha is in Kandahar right now. He is in the governor's house," said Abdul Khaliq, a former Afghan consul general to Quetta, Pakistan.

Gul Agha's forces were fighting the troops of former mujahideen commander Mullah Naqibullah, to whom Taliban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar had surrendered the city. However, the fighting had ceased, Khaliq said.

"At the beginning of the day there was a little bit of fighting, but right now the situation is calm," he told reporters.
