Amidst intense US attacks on the caves of Tora Bora near Jalalabad, where Osama bin Laden is suspected to have taken shelter, some reports said close to 1000 anti-Taliban forces have encircled one particular network of caves, giving rise to speculation that Osama bin Laden has been located.
Officials in Nangarhar province said hundreds of Osama's supporters are also holed up in the caves.
The local officials also claimed that a US airstrike in the area on Monday devastated an unit of Al Qaeda.
A report quoting the police chief of Nangarhar, Hazrat Ali, said 10 Al Qaeda officials died in the raid.
The same report, however, quoting Nangarhar military commander Haji Mohammad Zaman said that 18 people had been killed in the attack, including bin Laden's financial manager Ali Mahmud.
Zaman had earlier said that Ayman al-Zawahri, the number two man in Al Qaeda was wounded and possibly killed by the US bombs.
