 September 8: The sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandal at Shantaram Chawl, a hop, skip and jump from Keshavji Naik Chawl, celebrates its centenary year this season. The chawl , home to 1000 families and the first office of Bedekar Pickles, has decided to live it up and the mandal has a special cave decor. The chawl actually prides itself on being the oldest mandal in Bombay -- 110 years. Times were bad, when at Lokmanya Tilak's demand, community celebrations of Ganesh Puja were instituted as a mark of rebellion to the British rule. Photographs: Jewella C Miranda. |
