Om Ganesha Namah!
September 4: The 12-foot Lalbaug ka Raja is easily one of the most popular Ganpati idols in Bombay during the12 days of Ganesh Puja. Some two thousand or more Mumbaikars, carrying bundles of coconuts, huge malas of flowers, worship him daily during this period and countless others come by to have a look. Year after year artist Venkatesh Kambli has created him in an imaginative but elegantly simple style -- always seated, looking in front and single. Not for him the gyrations of standing on the shoulders of Atlas or Hanuman.
