PHOTOS: Brazil do a last 16 'hat-trick' over Chile

Hosts Brazil edged past Chile 3-2 in penalties in a feisty and open World Cup last-16 match in Belo Horizonte on Saturday.

The two teams were locked at 1-1 after extra-time before the hosts scraped through to the last eight. 

Mauricio Pinilla fired Chile's first spot kick straight at Julio Cesar while Willian fired Brazil's second wide. But a brilliant Cesar saved Chile's second penalty, by Alexis Sanchez.

Marcelo put Brazil 2-0 ahead. Charles Aranguiz converted Chile's third and Claudio Bravo save the next by Hulk. Marcelo Diaz put Chile level at 2-2, converting his side's fourth attempt. 

Neymar put Brazil 3-2 ahead. And then Gonzalo Jarra hit the post. 

It also meant that Brazil continue to be Chile's bogey team at the World Cup. The last three times (including this match) Chile has made it to the round of 16 in the tournament, it has come up second best against Brazil.

In the last World Cup in South Africa, at this very stage, Brazil beat Chile 3-0 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The Brazilians dashed the Chileans' hopes in 1998 as well, winning 4-1 at the Parc ds Princes (Paris).

Chile finished third in 1962 when they hosted the event and guess who beat them back then? 

Yes, it was eventual champions Brazil.

Brazil defender David Luiz bundled the ball over the line in the 18th minute after Neymar's corner was flicked on by Thiago Silva, though replays suggested the final touch may have come off Chile defender Gonzalo Jara.

It was the first international goal for Luiz, who signed a multi-million deal to move from Chelsea to PSG.

Chile equalized after 32 minutes when Alexis Sanchez took advantage of a sloppy pass from Hulk to place a low angled shot past Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

It was the second goal of the tournament for the Barcelona star, after his effort in his side's opener against Australia.

Brazil failed to trouble the Chilean defense much in the second half. 

In fact, it was Chile who went close, only to be denied by a reflex save from Julio Cesar.

It was also goalless after extra-time, with Chile playing those 30 minutes desperate to force a shootout. 

In the final analysis, the move boomeranged.
