Nadal stunned by qualifier Brown
Two-time Wimbledon champion, Rafael Nadal was booted out of the championships on Thursday, after being out-muscled and out-thought in four sets by an inspired Dustin Brown of Germany.
The World No 10 fell 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round as Brown, ranked 102 in the world, unleashed a barrage of thunderous serves and ground strokes, mixed with clever drop shots.
"My motivation is to be back to that level but I don't know if I can," Nadal said after his defeat.
Nadal had won his first Wimbledon crown in 2008, defeating formidable rival Roger Federer, and in 2010, he outplayed Czech Tomas Berdych for his 2nd Wimbledon title.
Ivanovic dumped out by Mattek-Sands
Ana Ivanovic became the highest-profile casualty of Wimbledon's opening days as the seventh seed fell to 158th-ranked qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands in a second round clash.
Ivanovic, a former French Open Champion and world number one, lost 6-3, 6-4 to become the second-highest seed to exit the women's draw after Simona Halep was beaten on Tuesday.
2014 Wimbledon finalist Bouchard eliminated in 1st round
Eugenie Bouchard's fall from grace continued with a first-round defeat by China's Duan Yingying at Wimbledon on Tuesday as her hopes of repeating last year's run to the final evaporated.
The Canadian 12th seed, crushed by Petra Kvitova in last year's showpiece, was beaten 7-6(3), 6-4 on Court Three and her ranking will now slide considerably.
Since reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January she has suffered eight first-round defeats.
Bouchard let slip a 2-0 lead in the opening set and after clawing back a 3-0 deficit in the first-set tiebreaker she capitulated with some unforced errors.
World number 117 Duan stayed cool when she served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, the Wimbledon debutant forcing Bouchard into a forehand error to seal victory.
Bouchard said that she suffered from a grade 2 tear in her abdomen after Eastbourne tournament.
"It probably wasn’t smart to play, but I didn’t want to miss Wimbledon,” she added.
Halep became the highest-seeded player to lose
Romania’s Simona Halep became the highest-seeded player to lose at Wimbledon, falling in the first round a year after reaching the semifinals at the All England Club.
The third-seeded Romanian, who also reached the French Open final last year, lost to Jana Cepelova of Slovakia 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
