US Open: Sania Mirza-Jie Zheng upset fourth seeds, enter semi-finals

Sania Mirza and Jie Zheng moved into the semi-finals of the women's doubles at the US Open, scoring a straight sets victory over Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Peng, on Wednesday.

The Indo-China pair, seeded 10th, beat the fourth seeded Taipei-Chinese combine 6-4, 7-6(5).

They will next play eighth seeds Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua of Australia, who beat second second seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-2, 6-3  

Mirza and Zheng, who bested sixth seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 6-2, 6-3 in the third round, had little trouble against the fourth seeds en route to the last four.

In the match at the Louis Armstrong stadium, a single break was enough to give Sania and her Chinese partner the opening set. 

It went on serve in the second before the Indo-Chinese pair did just enough, by securing a mini-break and holding serve thereafter. 

For Sania, it will be her first semi-final appearance in New York, and fourth overall in a major tournament.

The Indian has now reached the last four stage in the women's doubles at all the four major tournaments. 

She was a beaten finalist in the 2011 French Open, partnering Vesnina.
