Ukraine head coach Myron Markevych resigned from the post in protest on Saturday over the football federation's decision to punish his club Metalist Kharkiv for match-fixing.

On Tuesday, the Ukraine Football Federation ruled a 2008 match between Metalist and Karpaty Lviv had been fixed and punished a number of officials and players, although Markevych was not implicated.

"Ukraine's Football Federation has completely discredited itself with the recent ruling on FC Metalist and I have no moral right to work for an organisation that is purposefully destroying Kharkiv football," Markevych said in a statement posted on the club's website.

Markevych, who has led the national team since February, said he would stay on as head coach of Metalist.

Ukraine are co-hosting Euro 2012 with Poland.
