UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid beat Roma to record crucial away win; Wolfsburg edge Gent

Cristiano Ronaldo continued from where he left off in the early stages of the UEFA Champions League, adding to his goal tally as Real Madrid beat AS Roma 2-0 in their round of 16, first leg tie on Wednesday.

Ronaldo opened  the scoring in the second half and struck in the 57th minute when he picked up a pass from Marcelo on the left, brought the ball in and shot it into the top right corner.

After some good, attacking football on both ends, Real had the last laugh as substitute Jese drove the ball from the edge of the box past Roma 'keeper Szczesny to claim an important away goal advantage.

In the other round of 16, first leg encounter of the night, German club VfL Wolfsburg beat Gent 3-2 at the Ghelamco Arena in Belgium snatching a crucial away goal lead.

Julian Draxler scored twice as Wolfsburg took a big step towards reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League following his strikes in the 44th minute and in the 54th minute, capitalising on one of many errant passes by the home defence.

Max Kruse made it 3-0 with a close-range volley.
