Virdhawal picks gold, silver in pool

For the second day running Virdhawal Khade had mixed luck. He won one gold and had to be satisfied with a silver medal in another event on the fifth day of the third edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games, at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi, Pune, on Thursday.

Virdhawal, who lost to Ryan Napolean of Australia in Wednesday's 200m freestyle final, got revenge by winning the 100m freestyle final on Thursday, breaking his own Games record that was created in the heats.

The young Indian sensation, who had bagged gold in Wednesday's 50m butterfly, had to be satisfied with a silver in the 100m butterfly on Thursday.

Virdhawal was off the blocks in a flash in the 100m freestyle final and led from beginning to end to finish the race in a new Games record of 49.47 seconds; Australia's Ryan Napoleon was second in 50.66 seconds, while Thomas Barrett, also of Australia, took the silver in 51.05 seconds.

Lachlan Staples gave Australia another gold in the pool as he piped local star Virdhawal, winning in a new Games record of 53.63 seconds to win the race.

Virdhawal had to be satisfied with silver, coming home in 54.01 seconds, while Daniel Scott of Scotland was third in 54.86 seconds.
