The parents of deceased South African model Reeva Steenkamp have slammed the decision to grant convicted Oscar Pistorius parole in August, saying '10-month imprisonment is simply not enough for taking a life'.

Pistorius, the double amputee athlete, was sentenced to a five-year jail in 2014 after being found guilty of culpable homicide of his girlfriend, Reeva.

South African prison officials confirmed that he is set for a release on 21 August. Pistorius is likely to spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

Reflecting on the parole board's decision, Barry and June Steenkamp stated that although they had forgiven Pistorius for killing their daughter, a person found guilty of a crime must be held accountable for their actions, reported the Guardian.

The parents further said that the imprisonment sentence was simply too less for taking a life, adding that they fear this would not send out the proper message and serve as the deterrent that it should.

Meanwhile, a state appeal against Pistorius' murder acquittal will be heard in November.
