India's big hope Yuki Bhambri crashed out of the US Open men's singles qualifiers with a three-set defeat to Japanese Go Soeda while Prajnesh Gunneswaran also suffered a tame defeat, in New York, on Wednesday.
Bhambri, who recently beat French World number 22 Gael Monfils, suffered a 6-1, 1-6, 3-6 defeat at the hands of 22nd seed Japanese in the opening round, which lasted one hour and 44 minutes.
The left-handed Prajnesh, who has been named in Indian Davis Cup team as a reserve, lost 1-6, 4-6 to Germany's Yannick Hanfmann in his first round match.
India's hopes to see a singles player competing in the main draw of the last Grand Slam of the season still remains alive with Ramkumar Ramanathan featuring in the bottom half of the qualifying draw.
Ramkumar, now India's number one singles player at 156, faces seasoned Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, who is now placed 213 in the ATP ranking chart.
Mamata launches Kolkata logo for U-17 World Cup
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched the host city Logo of Kolkata, the venue for the final of FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2017.
The logo, a representation of the state's heritage and the official emblem for the tournament will form an essential link in the promotions and communications regarding the host city.
It will be important in building anticipation and interest for the event at a local level.
Also present at the launch were Project Director, LOC, FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 - Joy Bhattacharya, Tournament Director - Javier Ceppi and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs for the state of West Bengal, Aroop Biswas.
The iconic Vivekanand Yuva Bharati Krirangan will host 10 matches this October including the final, which effectively means that the winner of the first FIFA tournament in the country will be crowned in Kolkata.
India women wrestlers fail to impress at Worlds
Shilpi missed out on a chance to enter the bronze medal play-off round of women's 63kg after losing her repechage bout, even as other Indian women came a cropper in the World Wrestling Championships in Paris.
India are still without a medal after three days of the competition.
Shilpi went down to Henna Johansson of Sweden by a 'Fall' verdict in her repechage round to crash out of the tournament without even putting up a fight.
Earlier, other Indians in the fray -- Lalita (55kg), Pooja Dhanda (58kg) and Pooja (75kg) had lost their respective bouts in the Round of 16.
Lalita lost to Mariia Gurova of Russia 0-3, while Pooja Dhanda was handed an 8-12 defeat by Ningning Rong of China, and Pooja was thrashed 0-7 by Justina Di Stasio of Canada.
Orkhon Purevdorj of Mongolia got the better of Shilpi 10-0 in the qualification bout. However, Shilpi got lucky to get another opportunity to fight a repechage, owing to her Mongolian rival entering the gold medal round.
